Modernization of waste management processes in India through capacity building (ReWACa)
Waste management is a crucial challenge for India in terms of its far-reaching economic, environmental, and social implications. The waste management system in the country is underdeveloped, and more than 70% of waste is dumped or burned in the open.
As cities grow and living conditions change, solid waste is expected to triple by 2030, and greenhouse gas emissions are already doubling to 40 million tons. The Ministry of Urban Development (MOUD), the Planning Commission (2012), and the World Bank (2016) clearly identify the insufficient availability of technical and human skills as one of the key challenges in the waste management sector. Therefore, a specific target and a participatory and practice-oriented development program based on scientific data must be developed to address these challenges. The project idea was developed as part of a discussion between Indians living in Germany and government representatives, industry representatives, and Indian NGOs as part of research projects of the Indo-German Science and Technology Center (IGSTC) (Reserves and Pyrasol) and in training courses at Leibniz University Hannover. As part of the project work, teaching materials and didactic methods in accordance with CDIO standards will first be defined in collaboration with experts from Germany, based on the latest scientific and technical developments. Using these teaching materials and specified guidelines, “training of trainers” courses will be held in Delhi (August 2021) and Kerala (September 2021). The trained instructors will then conduct advanced training courses in Chennai (November 2021) and Kerala (November 2021). In addition, a final conference will be held in Hamburg (February 3, 2022), accompanied by brainstorming sessions.Meetings und Bedarfsanalysen online.
Afterwards, an online community platform will be launched with the 70 trained individuals with the aim of connecting all stakeholders. Our partner organization in India, the Centre for Education and Development, which has been working in the field of waste management since 1994 and has implemented a large number of projects and measures, will play a leading role. The diaspora will receive support from Germany in implementing the project by comprehensively fulfilling the task of project management, obtaining the necessary approvals, providing updated information, coordinating all project activities, providing budgetary resources, releasing funds, and ensuring the smooth running of the project.
